ANALYSIS OF SETTING

ANALYSIS OF SETTING

The novel the hunchback of Notre dame is mainly taken place during the 15th century in Paris; France. The main area of activity is around the cathedral Notre dame. This is also one of Paris’ notable landmarks. To which is if you look from the top you can see all of Paris. However to this the cathedral has a dark side to it called Place de Greve which is where the criminals are sent to be hung. This is also where the main tragic events take place. There is also the court of miracles which is where the gypsies and beggars live and form their own mini government.

Literary Devices
Throughout this novel I have seen two main literary devices 1) symbolism 2) imagery.
Symbolism
The cathedral is symbolism because as it is able at the top to see everything shows that this is the spot that the most activity is present throughout the novel. Whether it is at the top of Notre dame or down under at Place de Greve. It also represents by the height of the tower that this is where most the main events take place
Imagery
The author describes how the main hall was really there during the ear of the novel. He also made so easy to imagine what Quasimodo really looks like by the way he has described it in his writings.

The French Croissant
Bravery to Obsession
Throughout the past few years and centuries we have seen many people who have demonstrated bravery. Like one where Quasimodo had saved La Esmeralda from death. Since that moment the one who had adopted Quasimodo has had an obsession to La Esmeralda. To the point where she had to choose between being hung and death or a live a life of love where she would have to love a guy that she didn't love. And in the end she made the right decision by choosing death instead of forcing herself to love someone she didn’t love.

Character Analysis

Character Analysis
Quasimodo:
He is the protagonist of the novel. He is the hunchback of Notre dame. He was abandoned at the Notre dame however he was adopted by a priest at Notre dame named Claude Frollo. He has a hunchback, something coming out of his chest, a wart that covers an eye and is also deaf. Despite all of this he has a pure heart. This purity is directly directed to the cathedral. One of the few things that will calm him down is the sound of the bells of the cathedral.

Claude Frollo:
He is the antagonist of the novel. He is also a priest at Notre dame. He isn’t depicted as the usual evil character most people would imagine of. But he is depicted as very bright and compassionate. He has a brother Jehan who he spoiled as he had to take care of him himself because his parents had passed away. He is compassionate to Quasimodo. But he becomes mad and does black magic because of his failure to Quasimodo and Jehan. His obsession to La Esmeralda causes her to die by hanging and torture toward Quasimodo.

La Esmeralda:
She is the lost daughter of Gudule. She is a gypsy dancer. She has a goat named Djali. She gets everyone’s attention by her looks. Although sadly she was executed because she chose death over a life she has to love someone even though she doesn’t love him.

Analysis Setting
The novel The Hunchback of Notre Dame took place in Paris. The place was called Notre-Dame de Paris (the formal title of the Cathedral) indicates that the Cathedral itself is the most significant aspect of the novel, both the main setting and the focus of the story's themes. With the notable exception of Phoebus and Esmeralda’s meeting, almost every major event in the novel takes place in the cathedral, atop the cathedral or can be witnessed by a character standing within or atop the cathedral. The Cathedral had fallen into disrepair at the time of writing, which Hugo (the writer) wanted to point out. The book portrays the era as one of the extremes of architecture, passion, and religion. The theme of determinism (fate and destiny) is explored as well as revolution and social strife
